Mission: The Missouri Community Service Commission (MCSC) strengthens Missouri communities through volunteerism and service. Specifically, MCSC oversees the AmeriCorps*State program which invests over $38 million in funds and service to local communities. MCSC also helps local organizations recruit, retain, and recognize volunteers. Each year, Missourians volunteer $3.2 billion worth of service, and it is MCSC’s goal to help all Missourians know that they can volunteer.

Function: The Missouri Community Service Commission effects and administers the National and Community Service Act of 1993, and strives to make service and volunteerism a common expectation of all Missourians, with a special concentration on youth.

Compensation: The members of the commission shall receive no compensation for their services on the commission, but shall be reimbursed for ordinary and necessary expenses incurred in the performance of their duties.

Member Requirements: Member slots include a representative of local government; the Commissioner of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education; an individual with experience in promoting the involvement of older adults in service and volunteerism; a representative of a national service program; an individual with expertise in the educational, training, and development needs of youth, particularly disadvantaged youth; or an individual between the ages of 16 and 25 years who is a participant in or supervisor of a service program for school age youth, or a campus-based or national service program.

Political Requirements: Yes, not more than fifty percent plus one of the voting members of the commission are members of the same political party

Geographic Requirements: No. Appointments to the commission shall reflect the race, ethnicity, age, gender, and disability characteristics of the population of the state as a whole.
