Department: Mental Health

Mission:

Function: The State Mental Health Commission appoints the department director; advises the director on all phases of Department practices; advises the director in initiation, approval, and guidance of research projects and distribution of research funds; and assists the director in establishing, maintaining and reviewing plans, practices, rules and regulations, facilities, programs and services operated, funded or licensed by the Department.

Compensation: Members receive a per diem not to exceed $100 per each day devoted to the affairs of the board.

Member Requirements: 1 member must be a physician recognized as an expert in the treatment of mental illness; 1 must be a physician, licensed clinical psychologist, or other licensed clinician, recognized as an expert in the evaluation or treatment of persons with an intellectual disability or developmental disability; 1 must be a representative of groups who are consumers or families of consumers interested in the services provided by the department in the treatment of mental illness; 1 must be a representative of groups who are consumers or families of consumers interested in the services provided by the department in the habilitation of persons with an intellectual disability or developmental disability; 1 must be a person recognized for his or her expertise in general business matters and procedures; 1 must be a person recognized for his interest and expertise in dealing with alcohol and drug abuse; and 1 must be a person recognized for his interest or expertise in community mental health services
