Mission:
The mission of Truman State University is to offer an exemplary undergraduate education to well-prepared students, grounded in the liberal arts and sciences, in the context of a public institution of higher education. To that end the University offers affordable undergraduate studies in the traditional arts and sciences, as well as selected preprofessional, professional, and masters level programs that grow naturally out of the philosophy, values, content, and desired outcomes of a liberal arts education.
Function:
The Truman State University Board of Governors is the highest policy making body of the University, and the direction and control of the University is entrusted to it by the people of the state. The Board, when acting as a whole, is the governing authority for the institution. The Chair of the Board serves as spokesperson for the Board.

Number of meetings:
The Board generally holds six regular meetings in each fiscal year with the meetings being held in the months of August, October, December, February, April and June and are tentatively scheduled by the Board a year in advance. The June meeting includes a planning meeting/retreat, and special meetings of the Board may be called as needed.

4 voting members must represent Adair, Audrain, Boone, Callaway, Chariton, Clark, Howard, Knox, Lewis, Lincoln, Linn, Marion, Macon, Monroe, Montgomery, Pike, Putnam, Ralls, Randolph, St. Charles, Schuyler, Scotland, Shelby, Sullivan, or Warren County, providing that no more than one member may be from the same county; 3 voting members must be from any of the seven college districts as described in statute and from differing congressional districts; 2 non-voting members must be non-residents of the state; and 1 non-voting member must be a student
