Department: Higher Education and Workforce Development

Mission: The Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education’s vision is that every Missourian is empowered with the skills and education needed for success. That vision is implement through the mission to put Missourians on a path to learn, work, and prosper. At the direction of the Coordinating Board of Higher Education, the Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development develops, coordinates and implements a plan that outlines how the state’s postsecondary education and public workforce development systems can most effectively and efficiently provide higher education to students and meet the state’s workforce needs.

Function: The Coordinating Board for Higher Education employs a commissioner to serve as its chief executive officer and carry out its goals and administrative responsibilities for coordinating the state system of higher education and operating the state’s workforce development system. The higher education system includes 13 public four-year colleges and universities, 17 public two-year community colleges, 1 public two-year technical college, 25 independent colleges and universities, 120 proprietary schools and 39 specialized independent schools and colleges and theological institutions. The workforce development system administers federal and state funded employment and training programs through a system of 25 Missouri Job Centers and a number other access points across the state.
